A Great Grandmother's Legacy
Mama Flo, my great grandmother, came to live with us when I was four years old and quickly became my closest confidante. The bond we shared was transformative, as she carefully invested in the person I was becoming. I feel incredibly privileged to have had that time with her. She taught me how break down problems, build and beautify things, and to always keep commitments with the people I love.
Now, as a mother, I feel compelled to share her story with future generations. Little Florence is an opportunity to sift through my memories and bring the most defining experiences with Mama Flo back to life. In its highest form, Little Florence is an artistic culmination of the values I drew from our time together - patience, persistence, cleverness, fearlessness and the joy of making. As a parallel to growing up in a digitally accelerated environment, I want to instill those same values in my own children.
In our shared moments, whether reading Paul Laurence Dunbar poetry, baking yeast rolls, ironing outfits for the week ahead, watching Matlock, or listening to Marvin Gaye, I weaved together a sense of what it meant to live and achieve despite what people say. And therein lies the aspiration of Little Florence – a loving call to journey with children through the small, hard and beautiful things.
